Celebrity Rap Superstar
The show "Celebrity Rap Superstar" is one of the newest MTV reality shows. It premiered on August 30, 2007. The premise of the show is for eight rappers to teach eight celebrities to perform rap songs.
The show is hosted by comedian Kevin Hart and radio personality Liz Hernandez. There are three celebrity judges - D.M.C., Da Brat, and Big Boy. DMC is one of the founding members of the groundbreaking hip-hop group Run D.M.C. Da Brat was one of the first female hip-hop artists to achieve chart success. Big Boy is a Los Angeles hip-hop/R&B radio host on KPWR. Once the celebrities perform, the viewers voted on their favorites. During part of the show, the judges have the power to protect three celebrities from elimination.
The celebrities for the first season were: Shar Jackson (mother of two of Kevin Federline's children and an actress who has been on "Moesha" and "The Parkers" as well as several feature films), Kendra Wilkinson (one of Hugh Hefner's girlfriends appearing on the E! reality series "The Girls Next Door"), Sebastian Bach (the former lead singer for the heavy metal band Skid Row), Perez Hilton (a celebrity gossip blogger), Countess Vaughn (a Star Search '88 singing champion who has appeared on "Moesha" and "The Parkers"), Jason Wahler (reality star featured on "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County" and "The Hills"), Efren Ramirez (Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite), and Jamal Anderson (a former NFL running back for the Atlanta Falcons). The mentors of the first season were Redman, MC Lyte, Too Short, Kurupt, Tone Loc, Warren G, Bubba Sparxxx, and Bizarre.
Each week, the celebrities and their rap mentors face a challenge. The first week, they must rehearse and perform a hit song. The second week, the celebrity is allowed to perform a song of his or her choice. Things get harder in the third week as the celebrity must perform a song he or she has written. In the fourth week, the celebrities are paired in duos and they must sing together. The celebrities have to sing a song not only performed by their mentor, but with their mentor in the fifth week. The sixth week, the celebrities had to perform a fast rap. The seventh week, the final two celebrities had to perform three songs: a hip-hop anthem, a song chosen by the viewers, and an original song. The eighth week is the season finale where, like "American Idol," the celebrities perform their favorite song of the season.
The winner for the first season was Shar Jackson. In the finale, she performed "It Takes Two" with Kendra, "What a Man" with Kendra, Perez, and Countess, "Get Ur Freak On," and "Good Life." For winning, she received the Celebrity Rap Superstar gold microphone. Kendra Wilkinson was the runner-up.
