Date My Mom

"Date My Mom" is an MTV reality dating show that is not really quite what it sounds like. The standard premise of the show was for a guy between the ages of 18 and 24 goes on three separate dates with three different mothers, but, not because he want to date the mothers. It is because each mom is trying to convince the guy to date her daughter. Before the date, the daughter meets with her mother and tells her stuff that should and should not be told to the guy. Of course, the mothers don't always follow their daughter's advice and often leak information the daughters had asked them to keep secret!

By spending time with the moms, the guy learns about the daughters. The guy doesn't even get to see a picture of the three daughters before making his decision. The dates the moms and the guy go on are simple outings such as meeting for lunch, washing their cars together, or watching sports. One mom and guy even got tattoos together. It really just depends on a setting that is comfortable for them both. After the date, the mom talks to her daughter and tells her everything about the date. She tells her how good or bad the date was and what she thinks her daughter's chances are of being chosen.

Once he has made a decision, the moms and daughters meet him on a beach to hear his decision. He tells each of the three mothers why he did or did not pick her daughter to date.

Matt Vener, the former casting agent for "Date My Mom" told the Village Voice that he and his staff often found applicants by canvassing nightclubs, beaches, and colleges. He also said that sometimes they would purposefully pick a mother daughter duo in which the mother was much less attractive than the daughter. This would allow them and the viewing audience to see if the guy was really listening to what the mom was saying about her daughter, or if he was just going primarily by looks.

MTV did switch the show up a bit by allowed gay guys and girls to be contestants. Each season had five gay or lesbian episodes. Matt did admit that it was sometimes hard to cast for the gay shows because many 18 year olds (the typical age of those that were being cast) are still trying to come to terms with their sexuality and many have not come out yet to their parents. And some parents were equally as hesitant in that they knew their child was gay, but were not quite ready to let everyone they knew in on it by advertising it on television.
