HGTV's reality show "Design Star" first premiered on the network on July 23, 2006. The show is hosted by Clive Pearse, who is also the host of "Designed to Sell" and "HGTV Dream Home 2007." The show takes interior design contestants through challenges, just like Top Chef or Project Runway until they are down to the final two contestants. America then has the chance to decide who is HGTV's Design Star, receiving his or her own design show on HGTV.
The interior design challenges the contestants must face each week can include anything from redecorating an apartment using a particular color to redecorating a living room using supplies found from a certain type of store, such as a pet store or an auto parts shop. Contestants are judged on their technique and each week, one contestant is eliminated.
The three judges on the show are Vern Yip, Cynthia Rowley, and Martha McCully. Vern periodically appeared on TLC's "Trading Spaces" and now he is also hosting his own show on HGTV, "Deserving Design." Cynthia is a well-respected fashion designer with her own collection that is sold internationally. Martha has held the position of executive editor at In Style magazine since 2002. She was also the founding editor and beauty director of Allure magazine for 17 years before taking the position at In Style.
